Ultrasound scan at 32 to 34 weeks of pregnancy

The main purpose of scans in the third trimester is to measure head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), femur length (FL) and to estimate baby’s weight. Those measurements help to predict spontaneous labor, growth retardation and disproportionate development of the fetus.

Besides scan at 32-34 weeks provides:

  • checking the appearance and position of the placenta so that it wouldn’t interfere with normal birth
  • measuring the amount of amniotic fluid in order to eliminate polyhydramnios and olygohydramnion
  • checking your baby's position (cephalic, breech or transverse)
  • doppler study to assess blood flow in the vessels of the fetus and umbilical cord and thus ensure that the fetus gets enough oxygen and nutrients.
